Firstly, what does ‘plant hire’ actually mean?

The term ‘plant hire’ actually has nothing to do with the type you’d find in your garden, rather it refers to the very specialised heavy machinery that is used in the construction and civil engineering sectors. The reason this equipment has to be hired rather than purchased is that each unit would cost hundreds of thousands of pounds to own, which would make it financially unviable to most of us.

Do I need special training to use plant hire equipment?

Legally speaking, you don’t normally need to hold a licence to operate our excavators and piling equipment. However, the equipment we lease to our clients is highly specialised and can take some getting used to. We routinely instruct our customers on how to safely use our machinery in the interest of protecting both the individuals present on the site of operation and the drivers themselves from coming to any harm.

It is important to know that some sites will require a specific CPCS or CMPE certification to be able to operate this kind of equipment. If this is a scenario you find yourself in, don’t worry, as we can provide fully qualified and experienced operators for both short and long term hires, to save you time and money of going through the rigmarole of hiring yourself.

Is there anything else I need to think about before I hire equipment?

One of the most common issues faced with heavy machinery is access to the site. Often, you’ll find that this access is restricted in some way. The type of ground is also a consideration that must be addressed, as it will dictate which gear is most appropriate.

For the reasons listed, we will usually conduct a site visit to assess everything before proceeding to ensure all aspects are taken into account.

Is the plant hire equipment insured whilst I’m using it?

When our hired equipment it is in your possession, all the gear is your responsibility, so if it is damaged or stolen, it is your liability, which is why we would strongly recommend organising your own insurance before commencing works. For smaller jobs on private property, some insurers allow it to be placed under the house insurance for the duration of the hire.

So, let’s have a look at the gear itself…

The Movax SG 75 pile driver is a real pocket dynamo, comparing very favourably to much larger machines of its type. It is robust in design, very maneuverable and features an ease of movement for comfortably handling piles in even the trickiest of situations.

This particular equipment uses the Movax Modular System™ and is fitted with a standard arm and clamp, which can be swapped out for customised clamps and arms when the project calls for it. It uses the proprietary Movax Control System™ which controls the entire rig, including the auxiliary hydraulics and all of the unit’s piling operations.

The SG 75 is mounted on an Hitachi ZX350 construction excavator, as are all of our rigs, which rank amongst the very best hardware in the industry in terms of reliability, durability and performance. This versatile bit of kit which has an insatiable appetite for work.

Movax is a trusted name in the industrial piling industry and their equipment allows for greater productivity, which is why they are the brand that we use for hire. Our clients deserve only the best, so that’s what they get!

Next in our plant hire fleet is the Movax SG75v, which is an augmented version of the SG75 and is fitted with a ‘resonance free’ side grip hammer, a 360 degree camera, a height and slew restrictor and a safe load indicator. The rig even has an environmental benefit, running on eco-friendly, biodegradable hydraulic oil.

This particular equipment is specifically designed for use in projects, buildings and locations that cannot tolerate the ground vibration that conventional vibration hammers can produce. This avoids any structural damage to neighbouring buildings that frequencies below 38 Hz can inflict. The SG75v is a popular choice from our plant hire stock.

Finally, we have the Movax DH20 impact hammer, which comes mounted on a Hitachi excavator and is perfectly engineered to drive load bearing tubular steel piles, timber piles and H-piles into the most unforgiving of soil conditions.

They can also be used with side grip pile drivers and incorporate a leader, 1.3 metres in size. This piling hammer can also be mounted onto a onto a excavator mounted leader mast.

All of our heavy Movax gear comes in 2 versions, the MCS Pro and the MCS Lite, which both offer an easy to follow digital interface that makes controlling the gear a precise and highly controllable experience.
